Problem

In the inertial frame SS of a space station a lamp at the origin fires at t=0t = 0: call this event OO. Three further events are recorded in SS, all on the xx axis: AA: t=5.00 μst = 5.00\ \mu\mathrm{s}, x=900 mx = 900\ \mathrm{m}; BB: t=2.00 μst = 2.00\ \mu\mathrm{s}, x=900 mx = 900\ \mathrm{m}; CC: t=3.00 μst = 3.00\ \mu\mathrm{s}, x=899.4 mx = 899.4\ \mathrm{m}. On a spacetime diagram of SS with xx horizontal and ctct vertical to the same scale, the light cone of OO is the pair of lines x=±ctx = \pm ct. Take c=2.998×108 m s−1c = 2.998 \times 10^{8}\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-1}} and give each answer in m2\mathrm{m^2}. ((a)) Compute Δs2\Delta s^2 between OO and AA. ((b)) Compute Δs2\Delta s^2 between OO and BB. ((c)) Compute Δs2\Delta s^2 between OO and CC.
