Problem

In the heliocentric inertial frame SS, event AA is a flare on the Sun's surface at tA=0t_A = 0, xA=0x_A = 0, and event BB is a radio burst from a satellite at tB=2.00 st_B = 2.00\ \mathrm{s}, xB=9.00×108 mx_B = 9.00\times10^{8}\ \mathrm{m} (same yy and zz). The frame S′S' moves at v=0.800cv = 0.800c along the common +x+x axis of SS in the standard configuration. Gravity and the motion of the satellite are ignored. A student argues: "In SS the flare comes first, so the flare triggered the burst. But in S′S' the burst comes first, so in that frame the effect precedes its cause and relativity is inconsistent." ((a)) Compute Δs2\Delta s^2 for the pair AA, BB and classify the separation. ((b)) Compute Δt′=tB′−tA′\Delta t' = t'_B - t'_A in S′S'. ((c)) State in one or two sentences where the student's argument fails. Take c=2.998×108 m s−1c = 2.998\times10^{8}\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}.
