Problem

All masses below are invariant (rest) masses of bare nuclei, and every particle is taken to be at rest when its rest energy is quoted. Use 1 u=931.494 MeV/c21\ \mathrm{u} = 931.494\ \mathrm{MeV}/c^2, mp=1.007276 um_p = 1.007276\ \mathrm{u}, mn=1.008665 um_n = 1.008665\ \mathrm{u}, the deuteron mass md=2.013553 um_d = 2.013553\ \mathrm{u} and the triton mass mt=3.015501 um_t = 3.015501\ \mathrm{u}. ((a)) Find the mass defect of the deuteron in u\mathrm{u}. ((b)) Convert it to a binding energy in MeV, and give the binding energy per nucleon. ((c)) The reaction d+d→t+p\mathrm{d} + \mathrm{d} \to \mathrm{t} + \mathrm{p} takes place with both deuterons at rest. Find the energy released, QQ, in MeV.
