Problem

Use only the replacement rule aa†→a†a+1aa^\dagger\to a^\dagger a+1 and the ladder action a†∣n⟩=n+1 ∣n+1⟩a^\dagger|n\rangle=\sqrt{n+1}\,|n+1\rangle, a∣0⟩=0a|0\rangle=0. ((a)) Bring (a+a†)3(a+a^\dagger)^3 to normal order, showing each replacement. ((b)) Use your result to write (a+a†)3∣0⟩(a+a^\dagger)^3|0\rangle as a combination of number states, and hence find ⟨0∣(a+a†)6∣0⟩\langle0|(a+a^\dagger)^6|0\rangle without expanding the sixth power. ((c)) With x=ℏ/2mω (a+a†)x=\sqrt{\hbar/2m\omega}\,(a+a^\dagger), give ⟨0∣x6∣0⟩\langle0|x^6|0\rangle and check it against the sixth moment 15σ615\sigma^6 of a Gaussian of variance σ2=⟨0∣x2∣0⟩\sigma^2=\langle0|x^2|0\rangle.
