Problem
A long canal is at rest with depth h0=1.5m for x<0, behind a lock gate at x=0. For x>0 a stream flows away from the gate, in the +x direction, at u=0.8ms−1 with depth h=0.5m. When the gate is opened, a point downstream is reached by a J+ characteristic carrying the value from the still water and a J− characteristic carrying the value from the stream. Find the depth, flow speed and Froude number at that point.
