Problem

At latitude 40∘N40^\circ\mathrm{N} an ocean 3000 m3000\,\mathrm{m} deep is overlain, in its upper layer, by a two-layer structure with reduced gravity g′=0.015 m s−2g' = 0.015\,\mathrm{m\,s^{-2}} and upper-layer depth 400 m400\,\mathrm{m}. ((a)) Find the barotropic deformation radius LR=gh/fL_{\rm R} = \sqrt{gh}/f using the full 3000 m3000\,\mathrm{m} depth. ((b)) Find the baroclinic (internal) deformation radius L1=c1/fL_1 = c_1/f, with c1=g′h1c_1 = \sqrt{g'h_1}.
