Problem
A monopole source of volume-flow amplitude Q0 oscillating at angular frequency ω in a fluid of density ρ0 and sound speed c0 produces the far-field pressure p′=4πrρ0ωQ0sin(ωt−kr), with the associated radial fluid velocity u′=p′/(ρ0c0) in the far field, k=ω/c0.
((a)) Using the intensity I=⟨p′u′⟩ and integrating over a sphere of radius r, derive the radiated power P=8πc0ρ0ω2Q02, and confirm it does not depend on r.
((b)) A small sphere of radius a=4.0cm pulsates radially with surface velocity amplitude u0=3.0cms−1 at frequency f=300Hz in air at 20∘C (ρ0=1.204kgm−3, c0=343.2ms−1). Taking Q0=4πa2u0, check that ka≪1 and evaluate the radiated power.
