Problem

The converging-diverging nozzle of exit-to-throat area ratio 22 used in the text runs on air (γ=1.4\gamma=1.4) with its back pressure raised to pb=0.80p0p_{\rm b}=0.80p_0, where p0p_0 is the reservoir pressure. A single normal shock stands in the diverging section, and the flow is isentropic on either side of it. ((a)) Find, by bisection on the shock position, the area ratio As/A∗A_{\rm s}/A^{*} at which the shock stands and the Mach number M1M_1 just ahead of it. ((b)) Find the stagnation-pressure ratio p02/p01p_{02}/p_{01} across the shock and the exit Mach number MeM_{\rm e}. ((c)) Is the mass flow rate larger, smaller or the same as at pb=0.70p0p_{\rm b}=0.70p_0? Explain.
