Problem

A sample of polystyrene (monomer molar mass M0=104 g mol−1M_0 = 104\,\mathrm{g\,mol^{-1}}, bulk polymer density ρ=1050 kg m−3\rho = 1050\,\mathrm{kg\,m^{-3}}) is dissolved in toluene at T=298 KT = 298\,\mathrm{K}. Take each lattice site to be one styrene monomer, of volume v0=M0/(ρNAv)v_0 = M_0/(\rho N_{\rm Av}), about the size of one toluene molecule. Membrane osmometry gives Π=66.5 Pa\Pi = 66.5\,\mathrm{Pa} at c=2.0 g L−1c = 2.0\,\mathrm{g\,L^{-1}}, and Π=226.6 Pa\Pi = 226.6\,\mathrm{Pa} at c=6.0 g L−1c = 6.0\,\mathrm{g\,L^{-1}}. ((a)) Find the molar mass MM of the polystyrene from the intercept of Π/c\Pi/c plotted against cc. ((b)) Find the Flory-Huggins parameter χ\chi from the slope of the same plot.
