Problem

For an asymmetric blend of chains with NAN_A and NBN_B segments and interaction parameter χ\chi, the spinodal is the locus where the free-energy curvature vanishes, 1NAϕ+1NB(1−ϕ)=2χ,\frac{1}{N_A\phi} + \frac{1}{N_B(1-\phi)} = 2\chi, with ϕ\phi the volume fraction of species A. ((a)) Rearrange this condition into a quadratic equation for ϕ\phi, aϕ2+bϕ+c=0a\phi^2+b\phi+c=0, giving aa, bb and cc in terms of NAN_A, NBN_B and χ\chi. ((b)) For a blend with NA=500N_A = 500, NB=50N_B = 50 and χ=0.030\chi = 0.030, find both spinodal compositions, as volume fractions of A, to three significant figures.
