Problem

For small strains a layer of molten hot-melt adhesive (a thermoplastic polymer melt) is modelled as a single Maxwell element (a spring of instantaneous shear modulus G0G_0 in series with a dashpot), with G0=1.5×105 PaG_0 = 1.5\times10^5\,\mathrm{Pa} and relaxation time τ=4.0×10−3 s\tau = 4.0\times10^{-3}\,\mathrm{s}. At t=0t=0 a shear strain γ0=0.020\gamma_0 = 0.020 is applied instantaneously and then held fixed. ((a)) Find the shear stress immediately after the strain is applied. ((b)) Find the shear stress at t=8.0 mst = 8.0\,\mathrm{ms}.
