Problem

An uncrosslinked polymer melt (no network at all) is well described by a single Maxwell mode with G0=50 kPaG_0 = 50\,\mathrm{kPa} and τ=0.5 s\tau = 0.5\,\mathrm{s}. Someone measures G′(ω)G'(\omega) and G′′(ω)G''(\omega), finds that they cross at ωτ=1\omega\tau=1 (i.e. ω=2 rad s−1\omega = 2\,\mathrm{rad\,s^{-1}}), and concludes: "G′=G′′G'=G'', so this is the gel point of the sample." ((a)) Compute G′G' and G′′G'' at ωτ=0.1, 1, 10\omega\tau = 0.1,\ 1,\ 10. ((b)) Say whether the crossing is evidence of gelation, and give the correct criterion.
