Problem
An unentangled melt of chains with N Kuhn segments, each of length b and friction coefficient ζ, has the Rouse relaxation modulus G(t)=MρRTp=1∑Ne−p2t/τR,τR=6π2kBTζb2N2, where ρ is the melt's mass density, M the molar mass of one chain, R the gas constant and T the temperature.
((a)) Using η0=∫0∞G(t)dt and ∑p=1∞1/p2=π2/6 (a good approximation for N≫1, since the series converges quickly and no modes exist beyond p∼N), show that η0=36MkBTρRTζb2N2.
((b)) Writing RT=NAvkBT and M=NM0, where M0 is the molar mass of one Kuhn segment, show that at fixed monomer mass density ρ, η0 is proportional to N.
((c)) Two unentangled polyethylene melts have the same monomer mass density but N=50 and N=200 Kuhn segments per chain respectively. By what factor does η0 differ between the two melts?
