Problem

A planar nematic cell of a liquid crystal with dielectric anisotropy Δε=10.0\Delta\varepsilon = 10.0 is placed between electrodes with the field normal to the plates. The measured Freedericksz threshold is Vc=0.65 VV_c = 0.65\,\mathrm{V}, unchanged when the cell thickness is varied between 1010 and 40 μm40\,\mu\mathrm{m}. Using the Freedericksz threshold voltage Vc=πK1/ε0ΔεV_c = \pi\sqrt{K_1/\varepsilon_0\Delta\varepsilon}, find the splay constant K1K_1.
