Problem
Four measurements on a hypothetical ionic crystal, a tracer-diffusion couple, a polycrystalline steel and a metal wire are each summarised below. Translate each into the physical quantity asked for.
((a)) An Arrhenius plot of σT against 1/T for an ionic crystal has an intrinsic-region slope corresponding to an activation energy of 1.90eV and an extrinsic-region slope corresponding to 0.85eV. Find the Schottky formation energy ES and the migration energy Em.
((b)) A tracer-diffusion experiment gives D=1.0×10−16m2s−1 at T=1200K and D=5.0×10−15m2s−1 at T=1400K. Find the activation energy Q and the prefactor D0 of D=D0e−Q/kBT.
((c)) A Hall-Petch plot of yield stress against grain size for a steel gives σy=220MPa at grain size d=100μm and σy=310MPa at d=25μm. Find ky and σ0 in σy=σ0+kyd−1/2.
((d)) A metal wire has ρ(300K)=1.7μΩcm and ρ(4.2K)=8.5×10−4μΩcm. Using an increment of 1μΩcm per atomic per cent of impurity, find its impurity concentration in ppm.
