Problem
Self-diffusion in α-iron (body-centred cubic, lattice constant a=2.87A˚) proceeds by single vacancy jumps: each atom has z=8 nearest neighbours at a jump distance s=23a, and jumps into a vacant neighbouring site with attempt frequency ν0 and migration energy Em. The equilibrium fraction of sites that are vacant is the single Boltzmann factor cv=e−Ev/kBT for a vacancy formation energy Ev (a metal vacancy carries no compensating charge, so no factor of 21 is needed here, unlike for a Schottky pair).
((a)) Starting from D=61s2Γ for a jump rate Γ, and Γ=zcvν0e−Em/kBT, show that D=D0e−Q/kBT with D0=61s2zν0 and Q=Ev+Em.
((b)) State, with one line of reasoning, what D0 and Q become for an interstitial solute (such as carbon) that already occupies interstitial sites without needing a thermally created vacancy.
((c)) For α-iron self-diffusion take Ev=1.6eV, Em=1.3eV and ν0=5×1012s−1. Compute D0, Q and the self-diffusion coefficient DFe at T=1000K.
((d)) Carbon diffusing interstitially in α-iron has measured D0=2.0×10−6m2s−1 and Q=0.87eV. Compute DC at 1000K and the ratio DC/DFe.
