Problem

Zinc has mass density ρm=7.14 g cm−3\rho_m=7.14\,\mathrm{g\,cm^{-3}}, molar mass M=65.38 g mol−1M=65.38\,\mathrm{g\,mol^{-1}}, and contributes Z=2Z=2 conduction electrons per atom. Its measured electronic heat-capacity coefficient (tabulated, low-temperature specific-heat measurement) is γexpt=0.64 mJ mol−1K−2\gamma_{\rm expt}=0.64\,\mathrm{mJ\,mol^{-1}K^{-2}}. ((a)) Find the conduction-electron number density nn. ((b)) Find the free-electron EFE_F and γfree\gamma_{\rm free} in mJ mol−1K−2\mathrm{mJ\,mol^{-1}K^{-2}}. ((c)) Compute the thermal mass. ((d)) This ratio is less than one, unlike every case tabulated earlier for alkali, noble and simple metals. Name the mechanism responsible and say what this result shows about the two contributions to the thermal mass in general.
