Problem

A one-dimensional chain has lattice constant a=4.0 A˚a=4.0\ \mathrm{\AA}. At the zone boundary k=π/ak=\pi/a two degenerate free-electron plane waves eiπx/ae^{i\pi x/a} and e−iπx/ae^{-i\pi x/a} combine into the real standing wave ψ(x)=cos⁡(πx/a)\psi(x)=\cos(\pi x/a). ((a)) State the crystal momentum label ℏk\hbar k of this state, in kg m s−1\mathrm{kg\,m\,s^{-1}}. ((b)) Evaluate ⟨p⟩=∫02aψ∗(x)(−iℏ d/dx)ψ(x) dx∫02a∣ψ(x)∣2 dx\langle p\rangle = \dfrac{\int_0^{2a}\psi^*(x)\big(-i\hbar\,d/dx\big)\psi(x)\,dx}{\int_0^{2a}|\psi(x)|^2\,dx} and compare it with ℏk\hbar k.
