Problem

A de Haas-van Alphen measurement on a small, nearly spherical electron pocket in an intermetallic compound gives a fundamental frequency F=1.20×104 TF=1.20\times10^{4}\,\mathrm{T} for the extremal orbit. ((a)) Find the radius kek_e of the pocket, treating the extremal orbit as a great circle of the sphere. ((b)) A free-electron count for this compound predicts kF=0.620 A˚−1k_F=0.620\,\mathrm{\AA}^{-1} for the same band. State the percentage difference between the measured radius and this prediction.
