Problem

A layered metal has a Fermi surface that is, to good approximation, an infinite cylinder of radius kF=0.80 A˚−1k_F=0.80\,\mathrm{\AA}^{-1} with its axis along [001][001], perpendicular to the layers. A field B=2.0 TB=2.0\,\mathrm{T} is applied. ((a)) For B∥[001]\mathbf{B}\parallel[001] (along the cylinder axis), describe the k\mathbf{k}-space orbit and compute the real-space orbit radius. ((b)) For B⊥[001]\mathbf{B}\perp[001] (in the plane of the layers), describe the k\mathbf{k}-space orbit and the resulting real-space motion, and state whether a cyclotron period can be defined.
