Problem
A metal conducts through one electron band and one hole band, each an isotropic Boltzmann band with its own density and mobility, ne,μe and nh,μh. With B along z, each band on its own has the conductivity tensor of a single band, σ(i)=1+βi2σi(1±βi∓βi1),σi=nieμi,βi=μiB, with the upper signs for the electron band and the lower signs for the hole band.
((a)) Add the two tensors, invert the sum, and show that the transverse magnetoresistance is ρΔρ≡ρxx(0)ρxx(B)−ρxx(0)=(neμe+nhμh)2+(nh−ne)2μe2μh2B2nenhμeμh(μe+μh)2B2.
((b)) Find the high-field limit of Δρ/ρ when nh=ne, and show that it grows as B2 without limit when nh=ne.
((c)) Aluminium, treated as in the worked example on its Hall coefficient, has 1.06 holes and 0.06 electrons per atom, with μe=5μh. Evaluate its saturated Δρ/ρ at high field.
