Problem

A silicon solar cell (Eg=1.12 eVE_g=1.12\,\mathrm{eV}) is tested under AM1.5G illumination of incident power density 1000 W m−21000\,\mathrm{W\,m^{-2}}. The measurements are: short-circuit current density Jsc=38.5 mA cm−2J_{sc}=38.5\,\mathrm{mA\,cm^{-2}}, open-circuit voltage Voc=0.68 VV_{oc}=0.68\,\mathrm{V} and fill factor FF=0.80FF=0.80. ((a)) Calculate the cell's power-conversion efficiency. ((b)) The detailed-balance limit for silicon's gap is about 33 per cent. Express the measured efficiency as a percentage of that limit.
