Problem
A fully ionised hydrogen plasma has electron and ion number densities ne=ni=n (in m−3) and electron temperature T. For electrons of a single speed v, the free-free (bremsstrahlung) energy radiated per unit volume, per unit time and per unit angular-frequency interval, from encounters with ions of charge Ze is dωdVdtdW=AneniZ2v−1lnΛ, where A is a constant (independent of n, v, T and ω) and lnΛ, the logarithm of the ratio Λ of the largest to the smallest impact parameter that contributes, may be treated as a constant throughout this problem. A photon of frequency ν can only be produced by an electron whose kinetic energy is at least hν.
((a)) Electron speeds follow a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution f(v)dv=4πv2(2πkBTme)3/2e−mev2/2kBTdv. Using the energy threshold above, integrate v−1f(v) from vmin=2hν/me to ∞ to show that the volume emission coefficient is jν∝neniZ2T−1/2e−hν/kBT. You may use ∫vmin∞ve−αv2dv=2α1e−αvmin2.
((b)) Kirchhoff's law for thermal emission states αν=jν/Bν, with Bν=c22hν3(ehν/kBT−1)−1 the Planck function. Use this and part (a) to show ανff∝neniZ2T−1/2ν−3(1−e−hν/kBT).
((c)) A solar-like coronal loop has ne=ni=1015m−3, T=2×106K and Z=1, and is observed at ν=109Hz. Show that hν≪kBT here, and give the power-law index b such that ανff∝νb in this limit.
