Problem
An electron of Lorentz factor γ=104 moves with pitch angle α=90∘ in a jet threaded by a magnetic field of magnitude B=5×10−8T, and also sits in an ambient radiation field of energy density Urad=1×10−4Jm−3 in the frame used here. Let νg0=eB/2πme be the non-relativistic gyrofrequency and ωB,rel=eB/(γme)=2πνg0/γ the electron's actual (relativistic) angular gyration frequency. Treat β=v/c≈1.
((a)) The electron's radiation is beamed into a cone of half-angle 1/γ about its instantaneous velocity, and it sweeps through this angle at angular rate ωB,rel. Combine the time to sweep this angle with the retardation (light-travel-time) compression factor (1−β)≈1/2γ2 for a nearly head-on ray to show that the observed pulse duration is Δt≈1/(2γ3ωB,rel), and hence that the characteristic angular frequency of the radiation is ωc∼1/Δt∝γ2×2πνg0.
((b)) The pitch-angle-averaged synchrotron power of one electron has the same functional form as the pitch-angle-averaged inverse-Compton power, with the magnetic energy density UB=B2/2μ0 in place of the radiation energy density Urad: Psyn=34σTcγ2β2UB,PIC=34σTcγ2β2Urad. Show that the ratio Psyn/PIC depends only on the two energy densities, not on γ.
((c)) Using ωc≈23γ2(2πνg0)sinα, compute the characteristic frequency νc=ωc/2π of this electron's synchrotron emission, and compute Psyn/PIC for the stated B and Urad.
