Problem

At a point a quarter of the way out from the Sun's centre, solar Model S gives m=9.5×1029 kgm = 9.5\times10^{29}\,\mathrm{kg} (mass enclosed), L=3.8×1026 WL = 3.8\times10^{26}\,\mathrm{W} (luminosity carried outward through that point), P=2.3×1015 PaP = 2.3\times10^{15}\,\mathrm{Pa}, T=8.0×106 KT = 8.0\times10^{6}\,\mathrm{K}, and Rosseland mean opacity κ=0.27 m2 kg−1\kappa = 0.27\,\mathrm{m^2\,kg^{-1}}. ((a)) Evaluate ∇rad\nabla_{\rm rad} at this point. ((b)) State, with a reason, whether the point is radiative or convective, taking ∇ad=0.40\nabla_{\rm ad} = 0.40 for an ideal monatomic gas.
