Problem
The reaction rate per unit volume for two distinct nuclear species labelled 1 and 2, present with number densities n1 and n2 in a non-degenerate gas at temperature T, is r12=n1n2⟨σv⟩. In the centre-of-mass frame the relative speed v of a reacting pair, of reduced mass μred, follows the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution f(v)dv=4πv2(2πkBTμred)3/2e−μredv2/(2kBT)dv, normalised so that ∫0∞f(v)dv=1. The cross section is written through the astrophysical S factor as σ(E)=ES(E)e−EG/E, where E=21μredv2 is the relative kinetic energy and EG is the Gamow energy of the pair. (a) Starting from ⟨σv⟩=∫0∞σ(v)vf(v)dv, change the integration variable from v to E and show that ⟨σv⟩=πμred8(kBT)−3/2∫0∞σ(E)Ee−E/kBTdE. (b) Insert the S-factor form of σ(E) into this result to obtain the reaction-rate integral ⟨σv⟩=πμred8(kBT)−3/2∫0∞S(E)e−E/kBT−EG/EdE.
