Problem
In the Gamow-peak approximation the reaction-rate integrand is dominated by S(E)e−f(E), with S(E) varying slowly and f(E)=kBTE+EEG.
((a)) Find the energy E0 at which f(E) has its minimum, and show that E0=(4EGkB2T2)1/3.
((b)) Expand f(E) to second order about E0 and show that the Gaussian approximation to e−f(E), namely e−f(E0)e−21f′′(E0)(E−E0)2, has full width Δ=4E0kBT/3 between the two points where the exponent equals −1.
((c)) Oxygen burning proceeds partly through 16O+16O. Take the atomic mass of 16O to be 15.995u, the fine-structure constant α≈1/137.0 and muc2=931.5MeV. Using EG=2μredc2(παZ1Z2)2 with Z1=Z2=8 and μred the reduced mass of the pair, compute EG, then evaluate E0 and Δ at T=2.0×109K.
