Stars from the Inside, Ch Accretion power: mass transfer, discs and the weighing of black holes
Problem
In a globular cluster, a metal-poor 0.8M⊙ giant fills its Roche lobe and feeds a neutron star of mass M=1.4M⊙, radius R∗=10km, moment of inertia I=1.0×1038kgm2 and surface dipole field B∗=3.0×104T. The giant's nuclear evolution drives transfer at M˙=1.0×10−9M⊙yr−1, and the neutron star starts out spinning slowly.
((a)) Compute the accretion efficiency η=GM/R∗c2 and the accretion luminosity L=ηM˙c2, and compare L with the Eddington luminosity LEdd=4πGMmpc/σT. Can the neutron star take all the gas it is offered?
((b)) Compute the magnetospheric radius rm=[2πB∗2R∗6/(μ0M˙2GM)]2/7 and the equilibrium spin period Peq=2πrm3/GM.
((c)) Gas that joins the star from the disc's inner edge brings with it the specific angular momentum of a Keplerian orbit at rm. Show that the spin-up torque is N=M˙GMrm, and estimate the time needed to spin the star up from a slow spin to Peq, holding M˙, rm and I fixed.
((d)) How much mass does the neutron star accrete in that time? Compare it with the 0.6M⊙ envelope the giant can give before only its 0.2M⊙ helium core is left, and say whether this binary can recycle the neutron star into a millisecond pulsar.
