Problem

A resonance decays in its own rest frame with amplitude ψ(t)=ψ(0)e−iMt−Γt/2\psi(t)=\psi(0)e^{-iMt-\Gamma t/2} for t≥0t\ge0, zero otherwise, where MM is its mass and Γ\Gamma its total width (natural units). ((a)) Fourier transform ψ(t)\psi(t), locate the pole of A(E)A(E) at E=M−iΓ/2E=M-i\Gamma/2, and convert to the relativistic propagator 1/(s−M2+iMΓ)1/(s-M^2+iM\Gamma) using E−M→s−ME-M\to\sqrt s - M near the peak. ((b)) Show ∫−∞∞ds/[(s−M2)2+M2Γ2]=π/(MΓ)\int_{-\infty}^{\infty}\mathrm{d}s/[(s-M^2)^2+M^2\Gamma^2]=\pi/(M\Gamma) exactly, and state why the narrow-width factorisation σ→σprodB\sigma\to\sigma_{\rm prod}\mathcal B additionally requires Γ≪M\Gamma\ll M. ((c)) The Δ(1232)\Delta(1232) has M=1232 MeVM=1232\,\mathrm{MeV} and Γ=117 MeV\Gamma=117\,\mathrm{MeV} (PDG 2024). Evaluate π/(MΓ)\pi/(M\Gamma) in GeV−2\mathrm{GeV}^{-2} and the fractional error, of order Γ/M\Gamma/M, in treating the Δ\Delta with the narrow-width approximation.
