Symmetry and Flavour, Ch The collider experiment: from bunch populations to a measured cross section

Problem

A proposed proton collider stores nb=2000n_b = 2000 bunches per beam, each with N=1.0×1011N = 1.0\times10^{11} protons, circulating at revolution frequency frev=10 kHzf_{\rm rev} = 10\,\mathrm{kHz}. At the interaction point the two beams have equal, round Gaussian transverse profiles with σx∗=σy∗=20 μm\sigma_x^* = \sigma_y^* = 20\,\mu\mathrm{m}, and collide head on with no crossing angle. Calculate the instantaneous luminosity in cm−2s−1\mathrm{cm^{-2}s^{-1}}.
