Problem

An electron-positron storage ring modelled on LEP stores nb=4n_b = 4 bunches per beam, each with N=3.0×1011N = 3.0\times10^{11} particles, revolving at frev=44 kHzf_{\rm rev} = 44\,\mathrm{kHz}. The beams are flat at the interaction point, with σx∗=200 μm\sigma_x^* = 200\,\mu\mathrm{m} and σy∗=8 μm\sigma_y^* = 8\,\mu\mathrm{m}, colliding head on (F=1F=1). Calculate the instantaneous luminosity in cm−2s−1\mathrm{cm^{-2}s^{-1}}.
