Problem

A Λb0\Lambda_b^0 baryon (m=5.620 GeVm = 5.620\,\mathrm{GeV}, mean decay length cτ=441 μmc\tau = 441\,\mu\mathrm{m}) is produced with rapidity y=2.0y = 2.0 and transverse momentum pT=8.0 GeVp_T = 8.0\,\mathrm{GeV}. ((a)) Using mT=m2+pT2m_T = \sqrt{m^2+p_T^2}, E=mTcosh⁡yE = m_T\cosh y and pz=mTsinh⁡yp_z = m_T\sinh y, find the laboratory momentum pp and βγ=p/m\beta\gamma = p/m. ((b)) Find the mean laboratory decay length ⟨ℓ⟩\langle\ell\rangle and the Lorentz factor γ\gamma. ((c)) A daughter leaves at a laboratory angle of order 1/γ1/\gamma to the parent's direction. Estimate the daughter impact parameter b≈⟨ℓ⟩/γb\approx\langle\ell\rangle/\gamma and compare it, in order of magnitude, with cτc\tau. State in one sentence why a vertex detector's required spatial resolution does not have to keep pace with βγ\beta\gamma. ((d)) A displaced-vertex bb-tagged dimuon sample gives Nobs=15 200N_{\rm obs} = 15\,200, Nbkg=1200N_{\rm bkg} = 1200, acceptance A=0.30A = 0.30, efficiency ε=0.65\varepsilon = 0.65, and ∫L dt=5.0 fb−1\int\mathcal{L}\,\mathrm{d}t = 5.0\,\mathrm{fb^{-1}}. Compute σ×B\sigma\times\mathcal{B} in pb\mathrm{pb}.
