Problem

A beam of π+\pi^+ mesons with kinetic energy Tπ=195 MeVT_\pi=195\,\mathrm{MeV} strikes protons at rest, forming the Δ(1232)\Delta(1232) resonance (J=32J=\tfrac32). Take mp=938.3 MeVm_p=938.3\,\mathrm{MeV}, mπ=139.6 MeVm_\pi=139.6\,\mathrm{MeV}. ((a)) Using the relativistic invariant s=mp2+mπ2+2mpEπs=m_p^2+m_\pi^2+2m_pE_\pi and the two-body centre-of-mass momentum formula, find the pion centre-of-mass momentum k∗k^* at this beam energy. ((b)) Using the Breit-Wigner peak cross-section formula σmax⁡=2J+1(2sπ+1)(2sN+1)4πk∗2 BinBout\sigma_{\max}=\dfrac{2J+1}{(2s_\pi+1)(2s_N+1)}\dfrac{4\pi}{k^{*2}}\,B_{\rm in}B_{\rm out} and the fact that π+p\pi^+p is a pure isospin-32\tfrac32 state (Bin=Bout=1B_{\rm in}=B_{\rm out}=1), predict σmax⁡(π+p→π+p)\sigma_{\max}(\pi^+p\to\pi^+p). ((c)) Using the isospin Clebsch-Gordan decomposition of π−p\pi^-p and π0n\pi^0n into I=32I=\tfrac32 and I=12I=\tfrac12, predict σmax⁡(π−p→π0n)\sigma_{\max}(\pi^-p\to\pi^0n) at the same beam energy.
