Problem

At a total centre-of-mass energy s=2130 MeV\sqrt s=2130\,\mathrm{MeV}, the proton momentum in the pppp centre-of-mass frame is pp∗=504 MeV/cp_p^*=504\,\mathrm{MeV}/c and the pion momentum in the π+d\pi^+d centre-of-mass frame is pπ∗=200 MeV/cp_\pi^*=200\,\mathrm{MeV}/c. Take the cross sections at this energy to be σ(pp→π+d)=2.6 mb,σ(π+d→pp)=11.0 mb,\sigma(pp\to\pi^+d) = 2.6\,\mathrm{mb}, \qquad \sigma(\pi^+d\to pp) = 11.0\,\mathrm{mb}, and take sp=12s_p=\tfrac12 and sd=1s_d=1. ((a)) Write down the detailed-balance relation σ(pp→π+d)σ(π+d→pp)=2 (2sπ+1)(2sd+1)(2sp+1)2 pπ∗2pp∗2\frac{\sigma(pp\to\pi^+d)}{\sigma(\pi^+d\to pp)} = 2\,\frac{(2s_\pi+1)(2s_d+1)}{(2s_p+1)^2}\,\frac{p_\pi^{*2}}{p_p^{*2}} and rearrange it to solve for 2sπ+12s_\pi+1. ((b)) Evaluate 2sπ+12s_\pi+1 and hence the pion's spin sπs_\pi.
