Problem

A spin-12\tfrac12 particle with spin operator S=ℏ2σ\mathbf S=\tfrac{\hbar}{2}\boldsymbol\sigma is searched for a permanent electric dipole moment through the interaction energy HEDM=−d σ⋅EH_{\rm EDM}=-d\,\boldsymbol\sigma\cdot\mathbf E, where dd is a constant characteristic of the particle (its electric dipole moment) and E\mathbf E is an external electric field. ((a)) State how σ\boldsymbol\sigma (an angular momentum) and E\mathbf E (a polar vector, the field of static charges) each transform under the parity operator P^\hat P and under the time-reversal operator T^\hat T. ((b)) Use these transformations to show that HEDMH_{\rm EDM} changes sign under P^\hat P and changes sign under T^\hat T, taken separately. ((c)) Explain why a nonzero measured dd for an elementary spin-12\tfrac12 particle in a non-degenerate ground state shows that both PP and TT are violated by whatever interaction produces dd, given that the particle's spin is the only vector available to build the operator.
