Problem

The Δ\Delta-NN splitting fixes the hyperfine constant A/mu2=195 MeVA/m_u^2 = 195\,\mathrm{MeV}, with constituent masses mu=336 MeVm_u = 336\,\mathrm{MeV} and ms=510 MeVm_s = 510\,\mathrm{MeV}. The Ξ\Xi (ssussu or ssdssd, JP=12+J^P=\tfrac12^+) and Ξ∗\Xi^* (JP=32+J^P=\tfrac32^+) have the same quark content, with the two identical ss quarks forced by colour antisymmetry (together with a symmetric L=0L=0 spatial state and symmetric ssss flavour) to carry symmetric spin, that is, spin 11, exactly as the argument used for Δ++\Delta^{++} forces the three uu quarks there to spin 32\tfrac32. ((a)) Using this constraint, show that MΞ∗−MΞ=32A/(mums)M_{\Xi^*} - M_\Xi = \tfrac32 A/(m_u m_s). ((b)) Evaluate this splitting numerically and compare with the measured isospin-averaged masses M‾Ξ∗=1533.4 MeV\overline{M}_{\Xi^*} = 1533.4\,\mathrm{MeV} (from Ξ(1530)0\Xi(1530)^0 and Ξ(1530)−\Xi(1530)^-) and M‾Ξ=1318.3 MeV\overline{M}_\Xi = 1318.3\,\mathrm{MeV} (from Ξ0\Xi^0 and Ξ−\Xi^-), all PDG 2024.
