Problem
Consider the pion leptonic decays π+→e+νe and π+→μ+νμ, with mπ=139.57MeV, mμ=105.66MeV, me=0.511MeV, and measured B(π+→e+νe)=1.230×10−4, B(π+→μ+νμ)=99.988%.
((a)) Using the two-body decay-rate formula with the mℓ2(1−mℓ2/mπ2)2 helicity-suppression factor (whose origin is the fixed neutrino helicity), and taking ∣Vud∣ and fπ common to both channels, predict Γ(π+→e+ν)/Γ(π+→μ+ν) and compare it with the measured value.
((b)) As an idealisation, suppose a strangeness-changing semileptonic rate is 1/18 of a strangeness-conserving one at equal phase space, with both running through the same left-handed vertex rule so that only the quark coupling differs. Extract θC from this ratio and compare with the value 13.0∘ obtained from kaon decays.
