Problem
A sample of Bs0 mesons (mBs0=5.366GeV) is reconstructed in a silicon vertex detector. The tracks have mean lab-frame momentum ⟨p⟩=45GeV, and an exponential fit to the distribution of production-to-decay vertex separations gives a mean decay length ⟨L⟩=3.77mm. The measured semileptonic branching fraction is Bsl=10.7 percent. Take the Bs0 to decay by the same spectator mechanism as the B0, b→cℓνˉ with the light quarks unaffected, so that Γsl=192π3GF2mb5f(x)∣Vcb∣2,x=mb2mc2, with mb=4.8GeV, mc=1.5GeV, and f(x)=0.492 for this mass ratio. Use GF=1.166×10−5GeV−2, ℏ=6.582×10−25GeVs and ℏc=0.1973GeVfm.
((a)) Using the relativistic relation between lab decay length and proper time, find the mean proper lifetime τBs0 implied by these vertex data, in picoseconds.
((b)) Using this lifetime and the measured semileptonic branching fraction, extract ∣Vcb∣, and compare it with the value Aλ2≈0.042 that Chapter 10 used.
