Problem
Two laboratories want to regenerate the same amount of KS from a pure KL beam. Laboratory A uses a thin target of nucleon number density N and thickness d. Laboratory B uses a target of number density 2N (twice as dense) and thickness d/2 (half as thick), of the same material. Both targets are thin enough that attenuation of the beam across the target is negligible.
((a)) State how the amplitude of the regenerated KS component depends on the forward scattering amplitudes f (for K0) and fˉ (for Kˉ0) on a single nucleon, and on the number of nucleons the beam encounters.
((b)) Using this dependence, decide whether Laboratories A and B produce the same regenerated KS amplitude, and justify the answer.
