Symmetry and Flavour, Ch Neutral kaons: mixing, strangeness oscillation and CP violation
Problem
A kaon is produced at time t=0 as a pure K0. Work in the CP-conserving approximation KS≈K1, KL≈K2 (the admixture parameter ϵ∼2×10−3 is negligible for this problem), with K1=(K0−Kˉ0)/2 and K2=(K0+Kˉ0)/2.
((a)) Starting from ∣K0(t)⟩ written as a superposition of K1 and K2, each evolving with its own mass and width, derive P(K0→K0;t) and P(K0→Kˉ0;t) in terms of ΓS, ΓL, Γˉ=(ΓS+ΓL)/2 and Δm=mL−mS.
((b)) Using τS=0.8954×10−10s, τL=5.116×10−8s and ΔmτS=0.474, evaluate both probabilities at t=20τS, and say what the result shows about the strangeness content of a kaon beam that is old compared with τS.
