Problem
The matter-modified mixing angle for a two-flavour neutrino system in matter of electron density ne satisfies tan2θm=cos2θ−22GFneE/Δm2sin2θ, with V≡2GFne=7.6×10−14eV×Yeρ[gcm−3].
((a)) Show that the resonance condition (θm=45∘) gives a resonance energy Eres=Δm2cos2θ/(2V).
((b)) Apply this to the 1-3 sector, Δm312=2.513×10−3eV2 and sin2θ13=0.0222 (NuFIT 6.0, 2024), using the solar core value V=7.6×10−12eV (for Yeρ≈100gcm−3). Find Eres in MeV.
((c)) The 8B solar neutrino spectrum ends near 16MeV, and the rare hep neutrinos, the highest-energy solar component, reach about 18.8MeV. Explain what your result in (b) implies for a 1-3 resonance inside the Sun, and hence why the energy-dependent MSW transition (resonance near 1.9MeV) is governed by the 1-2 sector, with θ13 entering only as a small correction.
