Problem

A collaboration is designing a long-baseline accelerator neutrino experiment with a fixed baseline L=1300 kmL=1300\,\mathrm{km} between the neutrino source and the far detector. They want the beam energy EE chosen so that the experiment sits at the first oscillation maximum for the atmospheric splitting Δm312=2.513×10−3 eV2\Delta m^2_{31}=2.513\times10^{-3}\,\mathrm{eV^2} (NuFIT 6.0, 2024, normal ordering), using the oscillation phase 1.267 Δm2[eV2]L[km]/E[GeV]1.267\,\Delta m^2[\mathrm{eV^2}]L[\mathrm{km}]/E[\mathrm{GeV}]. ((a)) Find the beam energy EE (in GeV\mathrm{GeV}) that gives a phase of π/2\pi/2 at this baseline for Δm312\Delta m^2_{31}. ((b)) At this same baseline and beam energy, compute the oscillation phase associated with the solar splitting Δm212=7.49×10−5 eV2\Delta m^2_{21}=7.49\times10^{-5}\,\mathrm{eV^2}, and the corresponding sin⁡2(⋅)\sin^2(\cdot) factor. ((c)) State, with a reason drawn from (b), whether this experiment is well placed to measure Δm212\Delta m^2_{21}, and contrast this with a reactor experiment using a 180 km180\,\mathrm{km} baseline and a few-MeV\mathrm{MeV} νˉe\bar\nu_e beam.
