Problem
Suppose the hypercharges of one generation were not known. Keep the fields and their SU(3)×SU(2) content, Q(3,2), uc(3ˉ,1), dc(3ˉ,1), L(1,2) and ec(1,1), but give them unknown hypercharges yQ, yu, yd, yL and ye, with yQ=0. Require the four anomaly sums of this chapter to vanish: the mixed sum over the colour triplets and antitriplets, the mixed sum over the weak doublets, ∑Y=0 and ∑Y3=0, each state counted with its multiplicity.
((a)) Write the two mixed sums and show that they give yu+yd=−2yQ and yL=−3yQ.
((b)) Use ∑Y=0 to find ye in terms of yQ.
((c)) Use ∑Y3=0 to show that yu and yd are −4yQ and 2yQ in some order. Calling uc the field with hypercharge −4yQ and taking yQ=61, find yL, ye, yu and yd.
((d)) Show that, for any yQ, the hypercharges of dc and L satisfy 3yd+2yL=0, the tracelessness of hypercharge on the 5ˉ that SU(5) requires.
