Problem
A small spherical grain of a ferroelectric ceramic, radius a=3.0mm, carries a frozen-in, uniform polarisation P=Pz^ with P=2.0×10−5Cm−2. The grain sits in vacuum, carries no free charge anywhere, and its polarisation is unaffected by the field it produces.
((a)) Starting from the potential of a continuous distribution of dipoles, V(r)=4πε01∫τ′∣r−r′∣3P(r′)⋅(r−r′)dτ′, integrate by parts to show this is the potential of a surface charge σb=P⋅n^ and a volume charge ρb=−∇⋅P, and evaluate both for the grain.
((b)) Because σb varies as cosθ and ρb=0, write Vin=Arcosθ and Vout=Bcosθ/r2. Use continuity of V and the jump condition ε0[(∂r∂V)out−(∂r∂V)in]r=a=−σb (normal pointing from the grain's interior to the vacuum outside) to find A and B.
((c)) Show that Ein is uniform and that 4πε0B equals the grain's total dipole moment p=34πa3P.
((d)) Evaluate ∫sphereEdτ directly from Ein and the grain's volume, show it equals −p/3ε0, and state what this proves about the coefficient of the point term in the field of an ideal dipole. Give numerical values for Ein, p, and ∫Edτ.
