The Boundary-Value Problem, Ch Molecular polarisability, permanent dipoles and the Clausius-Mossotti relation
Problem
Hydrogen chloride gas is held at a fixed pressure of 1.000atm (1.013×105Pa). The measured electric susceptibility is χe=2.81×10−3 at T=350K and χe=1.82×10−3 at T=450K. The gas is dilute enough that the local field equals the macroscopic field.
((a)) Find the number density Nv at each temperature, treating the gas as ideal.
((b)) Compute ε0χe/Nv at each temperature and use the Debye equation ε0χe/Nv=α+3kBp2T1 to find the slope and intercept of the line through the two points.
((c)) Read off the permanent dipole moment p (in Cm and in debye, 1D=3.336×10−30Cm) and the electronic polarisability volume α/4πε0.
