Problem

Sulfur dioxide gas is held at 1.000 atm1.000\,\mathrm{atm} (1.013×105 Pa1.013\times10^5\,\mathrm{Pa}). The measured electric susceptibility is χe=7.72×10−3\chi_e = 7.72\times10^{-3} at T=300 KT=300\,\mathrm{K} and χe=4.56×10−3\chi_e = 4.56\times10^{-3} at T=400 KT=400\,\mathrm{K}. The gas is dilute enough that the local field equals the macroscopic field. ((a)) Find the number density NvN_v at each temperature, treating the gas as ideal. ((b)) Compute ε0χe/Nv\varepsilon_0\chi_e/N_v at each temperature and use the Debye equation to find the slope and intercept of the line through the two points. ((c)) Read off pp (in C m\mathrm{C\,m} and in debye) and α/4πε0\alpha/4\pi\varepsilon_0.
