Problem

A silver busbar carries an alternating current at the mains frequency f=60 Hzf = 60\,\mathrm{Hz}. Silver has conductivity σ=6.30×107 S m−1\sigma = 6.30\times10^7\,\mathrm{S\,m^{-1}}, relative permeability μr=1\mu_r = 1 and relative permittivity εr≈1\varepsilon_r \approx 1. ((a)) Evaluate Λ=ε0ω/σ\Lambda = \varepsilon_0\omega/\sigma and state whether the displacement current may be dropped. ((b)) Calculate the skin depth of the busbar at this frequency.
