Problem

A boost along xx with speed vv has rapidity φ\varphi, where tanh⁡φ=v/c\tanh\varphi=v/c, and is represented by the matrix Λμν\Lambda^\mu{}_\nu with Λ00=Λ11=cosh⁡φ\Lambda^0{}_0=\Lambda^1{}_1=\cosh\varphi, Λ01=Λ10=−sinh⁡φ\Lambda^0{}_1=\Lambda^1{}_0=-\sinh\varphi (the yy and zz rows and columns are the identity). Two observers, S→S′→S′′S\to S'\to S'', are related by two successive boosts along xx, each at v=0.90cv=0.90c. ((a)) Find the rapidity φ\varphi of a single boost at v=0.90cv=0.90c. ((b)) Using φS→S′′=2φ\varphi_{S\to S''}=2\varphi, find the speed of S′′S'' relative to SS, as a multiple of cc. ((c)) Verify directly, by computing cosh⁡(2φ)\cosh(2\varphi) and sinh⁡(2φ)\sinh(2\varphi) and substituting, that the single boost Λ(2φ)\Lambda(2\varphi) satisfies the isometry condition ΛαμΛβνηαβ=ημν\Lambda^\alpha{}_\mu\Lambda^\beta{}_\nu\eta_{\alpha\beta}=\eta_{\mu\nu} for (μ,ν)=(0,0)(\mu,\nu)=(0,0), (1,1)(1,1) and (0,1)(0,1).
