Problem
In a region of empty space there is a uniform electric field E=E0y^ with E0=3.0×105Vm−1 and a uniform magnetic field B=B0z^ with B0=2.0×10−3T. Use TEMμν=μ0−1(FμαFνα−41ημνFαβFαβ) with F0i=−Ei/c and Fij=ϵijkBk, and take ϵ0=8.85×10−12Fm−1, μ0=1.26×10−6Hm−1 and c=3.00×108ms−1.
((a)) Show that FαβFαβ=2(∣B∣2−∣E∣2/c2) for any fields, and show that the trace Tμμ vanishes whatever E and B are.
((b)) Show that TEM0x=(E×B)x/(μ0c), so that cT0x is the x component of the Poynting vector.
((c)) Evaluate T00 and T0x for the given fields, and the speed cT0x/T00 at which energy is carried along x. Say how the result sits with the dominant energy condition.
