Problem

A two-sphere of radius aa carries two charts. Chart 1 is the usual spherical chart (θ,ϕ)(\theta,\phi) with polar axis along zz: x=asin⁡θcos⁡ϕx=a\sin\theta\cos\phi, y=asin⁡θsin⁡ϕy=a\sin\theta\sin\phi, z=acos⁡θz=a\cos\theta, undefined at θ=0,π\theta=0,\pi. Chart 2 uses a colatitude θ′\theta' and azimuth ϕ′\phi' measured from the xx-axis instead: x=acos⁡θ′x=a\cos\theta', y=asin⁡θ′cos⁡ϕ′y=a\sin\theta'\cos\phi', z=asin⁡θ′sin⁡ϕ′z=a\sin\theta'\sin\phi', undefined at the two points on the xx-axis. ((a)) Write the transition map giving θ′\theta' and ϕ′\phi' in terms of θ,ϕ\theta,\phi, valid on the overlap (points on neither the zz-axis nor the xx-axis). ((b)) Evaluate (θ′,ϕ′)(\theta',\phi') at the point θ=90∘\theta=90^\circ, ϕ=90∘\phi=90^\circ. ((c)) Write the metric in chart 2 and state its signature at that point. Compare with the signature read off from the chart-1 metric at the same point, and say what this illustrates about signature and coordinate choice.
